Depending on the state they were in, it may have been illegal
for the kid to tape the convo without informing dear old dad.
Most (if not all) of those laws apply only to wiretaps-- taping
conversations over phone lines. It's rare for the law to prohibit
one-party in-person recordings. Generally speaking, unless a telephone
(or other electronic communication medium is involved) people are free
to tape their entire lives without telling everyone around them that
it's happening.
Given the result of the tape and the loss of reputation
and income, I foresee the end result not quite being what
the kid planned.
If the tape is legal, then the loss of reputation and income is
irrelevant. Truth is the ultimate defense to a defamation lawsuit and in
this case, the tape itself *is* the truth.
