I've been trying to hark back and think of some cases from TV past
where someone didn't speak with their native accent while playing an
American character on a TV show. How many can you name?

Canadians don't count, eh!

Don't forget Hugh Laurie - the best at the American accent.

Actually, this isn't any different from Americans playing Brits -
Kirsten Dunst, Anne Hathaway, Renee Zellweger....

All of whom (and other Yanks) have gotten attacked for their British
accents. When Brits finally saw Bridget Jones' Diary, they mostly
stopped attacking Zellweger on her accent (many gave her props for it
even when they were saying she was still too skinny).

The irony is that, according to a few RSC scholars (------ Barton.
David Barton?), the English accent of Shakespeare's time was
apparently not even close to modern British. It was more of a mix
between Scottish and (IMO, west-coast) American -- and a little bit of
gargling.

LORELAI: I am so done with plans. I am never, ever making one again.
It never works. I spend the day obsessing over why it didn't work
and what I could've done differently. I'm analyzing all my shortcomings
when all I really need to be doing is vowing to never, ever make a plan
ever again, which I'm doing now, having once again been the innocent
victim of my own stupid plans. God, I need some coffee.
