If only. There used to be a utility program written specifically for the *old* Netscape news readers [by Desiderata software] which would automatically kill any message posted to more than one newsgroup, or a higher number set by you, in the newsgroups you choose.
My tin newsreader does this. In fact, I had not seen this entirely
pointless thread until someone stripped off the crossposts.
That would be me, because I try to do that on all messages that I reply to. :)
I've found anything crossposted to more than 2 groups is useless drivel
at best, and usually just flamewar trolling.

Unfortunately, I think I may miss some specific show posts because of
the tendency for folks to create alt.<tvshowname> and then crosspost
to that plus a genre specific group plus r.a.t. On the other hand a
lot of those tend to be fanwanks anyway, so no great loss.
I agree. I'd love to have that option again. Guess I'll have to check out other newsreaders.
