Whither the comedy adventure?

USA channel likes to advertise that its channel is where characters are
welcomed. While its original series are clearly character-driven shows, it
has also carved out for itself a once staple of the broadcast networks:
The comedy adventure.
Starting with MONK, then last year adding PSYCH and now this season, BURN
NOTICE to complete the comedy adventure trilogy. They stand in contrast to
the oh so serious cop, doc or lawyer dramas all the rage on broadcast nets.
Yet the comedy adventure used to commonplace on the Big Three, shows such as
ROCKFORD FILES, BARETTA, STARSKY & HUTCH, DUKES OF HAZARD, KNIGHT RIDER,
MAGNUM P.I., SIMON & SIMON, HARDCASTLE & MCCORMICK, THE A-TEAM, MURDER SHE
WROTE, DIAGNOSIS MURDER, etc. Yet those seemed to have petered out during
the 90s so that ALLY MCBEAL stood out in contrast--as does BOSTON LEGAL and
BONES today.
The bad news is such fare has been relegated to cable. The good news is that
if they can be done profitably on cable, that significantly expands the
number of providers, with the financial bar lowered for those with ideas to
get their shows out ala FX's RESCUE ME and THE RICHES.
Still, it would be nice to see their return in numbers to the broadcast
networks.
