Former Pirate Master contestant Cheryl Kosewicz was found dead in her
home from an apparent suicide on Friday.

Kosewicz, a 35-year-old deputy district attorney that had recently
relocated to Sparks, NV, had been the fourth contestant eliminated
from the recently canceled CBS reality series. Prior to moving to the
Washoe County District Attorney's Office in Reno, NV, Kosewicz had
spent six and a half years working in the Clark County District
Attorney's Office in Las Vegas. According to her CBS biographical
information, she had specialized in the prosecution of sexual abuse
cases.

Kosewicz's death, which is still under investigation, occurred less
than two months after her boyfriend, Ryan O'Neil, also took his own
life, Reno's KOLO-TV ABC affiliate reported Sunday.

"According to a Pirate Master cast member, who asked not to be named, Kosewicz had missed work two days in a row. She was found in her home on July 27. The cast member went on to say that Kosewicz had been traumatized by the death of her boyfriend and took the news that CBS was canceling Pirate Master very hard, saying she was “super upset.”"

Depression seems to be a common symptom among former contestants of reality TV shows. It's not hard to see why: They go from the adrenalin rush of producing a TV show and the fame of being seen by millions on TV, back to the obscurity of their previous lives. Some former contestants from Survivor have needed psychotherapy, a few for years. (The producers of CBS's new show "Kid Nation" have admitted that even a few of the kids who performed on that show now have depression.) Unlike professional actors, it's not a career for most reality show performers, so they don't know how to take the ups and downs of bad reviews, ridicule by viewers, and canceled shows.

And in Cheryl's case, she was also depressed over her boyfriend's recent suicide. That's a lot for one human being to take.
