I just watched the first two episodes and I'm getting _plot_
sickness from this show. The whole weird premise doesn't make
sense but, apparently, we're supposed to be sufficiently intrigued
that we will tune in each week to see who the conspirators are and
why they are doing these things to our lead characters.

Does this mean that there's more to the conspiracy than the "We've
bet a lot of money on you, now win this race or we'll kill your
wife" that's implied by the preliminary reports and the one or two
ads I've seen?

It's hard to tell. It doesn't really make sense that they have
to shanghai some participants (and it's not clear if all participants
are shanghai'd or somehow actually sign up) by kidnapping spouses
and the like. It implies they need specific players, and could
not fathom some other means of enticing them in.

I saw it (and hesitated to post much since you people in the US
haven't seen it yet), but while it has elements of "Gumball Rally"
and even "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" to it, it seems more
like something out of a Stephen King novella/movie. Think "Running
Man" a gameshow where there are serious consequences, or his novella
"The Walk" where people are somehow forced to walk, and there is a prize,
but if they falter, they are dead.

There seems to be a bigger sense of "anything goes" than just an
illegal race across the country. That the broken laws can or
will be bigger than mere speed limits. I saw "seems" because we
were on the verge of some illegality, and it was sidestepped, so
I wonder if we really were about to see the illegality, or if
it was a fake. (ANd that's cryptic since the episodes haven't
aired in the US yet).

But unlike "Mad World" where honest people get carried away and
break the law, these seem to be far more desperate people in
this race, willing to break the law to stay in the race.
