"The Simpsons: The Complete First Season" - 1.6 million
"Band of Brothers" - 1.4 million
"The Sopranos: The Complete First Season" - 1.3 million
The results are surprising considering many items on the list retail
between $75-$150. That means HBO has pocketed in the neighborhood of
$97-$195 million for the first season of "The Sopranos" alone
..
I HATE when people distort numbers like that. Yes they collected ~$97
million, but that's the GROSS value. How much is the *net* after they
subtract out the costs of editing, recording, producing, and shipping?
Don't forget to subtract the DVD distributor's (Miramax's) profit.
I bet HBO gets <$1 net profit per set. Or $1.3 million for Sopranos 1.
Less then the profit they get from selling reruns to TNT (or whoever).
Look at Angel (below):
..
WB's "Angel" to TNT for a bargain basement $250,000 per
episode. That [$5.5 million per season sale] will likely be
eclipsed by "Angel's" sales on DVD. With sets selling for $40-50,
Fox would only have to sell 125,000 copies per season
..
Again, that's GROSS profit. After you subtract the various
production/shipping costs, Fox only gets ~$1 per dvd set sold. No way
is Angel going to sell 5.5 million dvds per season. Or even 1 million.
That means the TNT sale was *far* more profitable than the dvd sales.
