I'm sure I just missed it, but someone at least tried to use the
Internet
to
learn about what happened in the outside world, right? The
Internet is
supposed to be pretty resilient to these kinds of things.
The phones, television and radio, even police radio, is out.
Presumably
this means all the optical lines out of town are down as well. That
leaves them with IP over carrier pigeon, and the latency on that is a
bitca.
The police radio works, but only between the local cops right? I
thought the cops out searching were communcating via radio.
Correct. The local radio works between cars and base, but the
inter-agency radio doesn't get any response.
For now. I'm sure that during the second season they will find other
pockets of humanity (if they don't do it before then.) Shades of
Jeremiah.
What about IP over satellite? In rural areas, such as this one,
satellite
Internet via small dishes is often just about the only broadband game in
town.
That works great when the uplink site is still alive and well. In this
case any satellite Internet service is likely located near a big city
and was probably taken out in the attack.
Beyond just the Internet, what about anyone in town with large
satellites,
such as sports bars and local radio/TV stations? Those are all knocked
out
too?
All the TVs, even the one at the bar, went out long before the power
failed. It appears that all the broadcasters went off at once and
without warning, right in the middle of the President's address.
These are good questions. It's unclear how big Jericho is. I gather
they don't have their own TV or radio station. But the power comes from
SOMEWHERE. It's hard to imagine what would happen that would cause all
signals to go to static but not shut down the power grid.
Oddly, they do seem to have their own power plant in town. The power
failure was attributed to the power drain from Denver. Presumably, that
means that once the local grid is isolated from the national grid, the
local plant will be able to support it.
Depends on what their power source is. If it's natural they may be
okay for a number of years, but if it depends on coal or other fuel
they may only be good for a matter of days/weeks without re supply.
If it's a dam that means there's a river and boats and all sorts of
stuff. If it's not a dam . . what other 'natural' power source could
they have in Kansas? Actually, are they likely to have a dam in Kansas?
Or for that matter, those mountains in the distance they watched the
mushroom cloud pop up behind?
