In the commentary for the 1st episode of s3, the producer (not

this is the music used for the "International" (England and
Australia I guess) version of Dawsons Creek for all 6 seasons
(IDWW was used for all 6 seasons in Canada and the US) and that
part of the reason was that he preferred that music, but he also
said there were "financial reasons" for using that opening music.
Well, the reality is that they would have to pay for each instance
of the music being used. Which means that for a 22-episode season,
they'd have to pay whatever the fee was for 22 uses of the song.
Paramount had what I thought was a creative way of getting around
this for the first season of JOAN OF ARCADIA with its use of
Joan Osborne's "What If God Was One of Us" as the theme. For the
first episode on each disc, they'd have the regular credits
sequence with the Osborne tune. For the rest of the episodes,
they left out the opening credits sequence, and just had the
regular cast's names running through the opening scene of the
episode (as is regularly done with THE CLOSER).
