It still has to rely on the program guide. This is
true of any type of DVR.

I have a Comcast DVR digital cable box that allows one to record 2
programs simultaneously.
However, you are right that unless Comcast's program guide correctly
lists the extra 3-5 min [which Comcast's prog guide seldom does] it
doesn't help with shows like The Shield [unless you add the extra min
-which seldom works OR record both 10 and 11pm shows].

However I also have a Webtv [MSNTV] which DOES list correct running
times in its guide and one can [optimally] record from that prog list.
But I also have a GoVideo DVR/VCR combo set that unfortunately is not
fully compatible [no codes to go with my MSNTV] for recording on tape.
