Technically speaking, the "first" season of The OC would be better
described as the First and Second seasons (and thus, The OC is just
starting its fourth season). The short initial order was a lack of
confidence on FOX's part in both the show and the summer schedule
experiment that FOX was trying with it and, IIRC, the ill-fated Method
& Red (note that FOX hasn't repeated the experiment). FOX's lack of
faith in the series was, of course, proven wrong by the show's instant
success.
