I think pi was used for dramatic license, because it's a mathematical
thing that many lay people have heard of.
I recently read a book about the history of the study of the Riemmann
Hypothesis, and mathematicians really are amazed at how many areas of
mathematics and other sciences this touches. The hypothesis is about
prime numbers, but it, and related theorems, relate to many things that
wouldn't seem to be prime-related, including things like quantum
mechanics.
