"Desperate Housewives" is still the show that could've been, which is a
cross between "Diary of a Mad Houswives" and maybe "Stepford Wives."
Instead, they went the bubble gum route, complete with bubble gum type
music. And that narrator's voice is just increasingly rubbing me the
wrong way, being much too structured, nasal-like and smarmy. As for
"Charmed," who really still watches that after 7 years and why?

"Surface" and "Prison Break" are my two picks of the night also. I
gave up on "CSI: Miami" in the course of season 1. The sitcoms "How I
Met Your Mother" and "Kitchen Confidential" may click with me, and as
bad a press as "Out of Practice" is getting, I'll give at least the
pilot a look-see to see if it's really that bad.

I'll be giving "Bones" a try and if it's of any value, it just may take
over for "NCIS," which I had only been watching sporadically and with
less and less interest as it went along. "Supernatural" may work in
its own offbeat way, but we'll see if that comes to pass. "House" still
bugs me with Hugh Laurie's strained American accent, and it's only
strained-sounding if you're familiar with the fact that he's British.
Sometimes I wish I just didn't know as much as I do. And don't even
bother with "Close to Home," it's too ludicrous a premise. And don't
get me started on "Gilmore Girls" either.

Terrible night, terrible. "Stacked" has actually been a surprisingly
funny show in its limited run, but it remains to be seen if it can keep
it up when it returns in November. There's also bad press for
"Freddie," but I don't know, it sounds like it could be funny in its
own dumb way. If Mandy Patinkin can't pull off "Criminal Minds," the I
doubt I'll stick with it. There's a lot of talk about "Invasion" but I
got a gut feeling it's going to move slower than a dead body. And I
still scratch my head over what the big fuss is about "Veronica Mars."
She's gotta be one of the most one-dimensional and boring characters on
TV. "One Tree Hill" and "Lost" are simply immeasurably forgettable
fare.

"Smallville" has never been the Superman or boy or teen I know and want
to see. "Reunion" either works with the first episode or the series
just dies right there. The original "CSI" is always a good standby.
The appeal of "Without a Trace" has always eluded me; I don't know,
there's something about a missing person of the week that just strikes
me as more redundant and less interesting than the serial killer of the
week. My initial picks: "Everybody Hates Chris" and "Night Stalker,"
though the latter would have to be much better as a revisionist series
of the original than the original was as the original to sustain my
interest in it, and I'm dubious about it at this point.

You got "Ghost Whisperer" and "Threshold" right, but I'd also throw in
"Killer Instinct" and maybe even "Twins," with there being some good
talk about the latter. Will I even stick with "Living with Fran"? It
was an okay sitcom and if it manages to churn out more okay laughs than
not at the start of its new season, then maybe I'll still stick with
that one as an easy time-filler. "Numb3rs" is okay, but there's
something about its casting that doesn't fully click with me.

Anything but TV.

THE REAL SCOOP: You only really got 5 picks right and a couple of
so-sos. I'd brush up on your tuning skills if I were you.
