Once you finish training, the food, housing and clothing weren't free when I was in the Canadian military. And the military will only give $20,000 towards your education (but now it's only in the field that you were in when you were in the military - so a cook can't come out and get 20 grand to help become an electrician).

Yeah, great perks.

And, BTW, the American soldiers weren't allowed to "resign". Even now, the ones that want to leave, are being forced to stay. It's a back door draft.
