Re: Canadian journalist decries media's left-wing bias

As near as we can tell, it was on 8/5/2005 3:24 PM when Nicholas Fitzpatrick transmitted as follows:

Hang on ... Martin is on the right-wing of a centrist party. Toronto will likely vote for this party yet again, in this election. Not sure your point here ... I would think if there was a left-wing media bias in Toronto, they would biasing both against Martin AND the Tories, and voting for one of the left-wing parties such as NDP or Green.

Nick

Martin is captured by his party, the same way Bob Rae was. The caucus and party apparatus is full of those who believe there's no problem or issue that cannot be solved or improved with a government program, funded by tax dollars transferred to Ottawa from Alberta fossil fuel revenues.

He's not right of centre. He's a pragmatist. If popular opinion says cut taxes, Martin cuts taxes, but just a little bit, and not until a few budgets down the road. It's not because he believes lower taxes are good; it's because the Reform, then Alliance, and now Conservatives advocate for them, and Martin wants to be able to counter that election platform plank. "You want lower taes? I did that."

As for media bias, reporters and editors are just people. They have opinions. Most of those opinions are formed in an environment of helping the little guy, gunning for high powered executives, and dealing with disaster, tragedy and death. Of course there's a skew left. However, Peter Kent will make a great MP in a Stephen Harper government, and the sooner the better.
