Doesn't that depend on which way you're facing? How about east
or west?

Mais bien sûr, Monsieur. Face west and we're straight ahead, face
east and we're right behind you. This, naturally is presuming
you're somewhere over the middle of the North Atlantic. If you're
over the Pacific then just give me your address and I'll send you
a post card.
All very well, but it takes just one swift switch of the magnetic
poles and its a jeu de boules tout à fait différent!

The French translation of Eats, Shoots and Leaves is long overdue.
The translator has spent the last two years on it and hasn't got
beyond the title.

Maybe I can help : "Mange, Tire et S'en Va".
How's that for a start?

Good but doesn't present the potential purchaser with the potential for
ambiguity resolved in the book's content.

Forgive me if I mentioned this before but I was delighted with the Swedish
subtitle translation of a joke in Young Frankenstein.

A HORRIFYING CRY OF A WOLF!

FREDDY
(making a joke)
Werewolf.

IGOR
There.

FREDDY
I beg your pardon?

IGOR
(pointing to
the woods)
There wolf!

Swedish for werewolf is 'varulv', Swedish for where is 'var'. Thus Igor's
response of 'där ulv', 'där' being Swedish for there, had them rolling about
in the aisles in the Göteborg cinema I first saw it in. When I returned on a
later date to see Life Of Brian I was, embarrassingly, the only person in
the entire cinema to howl with laughter when Pilate declared of Biggus
Dickus "He wanks as high as any in Wome". Several rows of blond heads turned
round to glare at the obvious idiot in the back row.
