The great thing about the Freeview boxes is you can use the electronic
programme guide to pick programmes rather than set times. At the moment
they don't do a Sky+ and adjust the times if the programmes overrun but
for normal viewing they are foolproof. However there are ones that have
hard disks and ones that have DVD recorders but none that have both,
probably because turning Freeview hard disk format into DVD format is
not an easy task - took me 3 hours on a dual Xeon processor PC to get
each hour of live 8 onto DVD from a hard disk recording.

In other techie news, Orb now have a UK specific version of their
software which works with UK DVB-T i.e. Freeview recordings. Result
being I can access the TV programmes recorded on my PC from anywhere
with internet access. So when I get back from The Fool and Bladder I
can lean over the balcony at my bedroom window having a crafty one and
watch the evening's Eastenders on my iPaq full screen. Alternatively I
can go into work and watch it there, in the background of course while
drafting up policy documents for TB. Live TV only works with analogue
cards for now but it's still pretty neat. In addition you can set up 3
users on your home PC all of whom can access your TV recordings be they
in the UK or anywhere else in the world with the picture quality
adjusted to their download speed and my upload speed.
