Cheri:I definitely agree with some of it, but bag of bones, bony elbows, anorexic,
IMO is in no way as offensive as fat pig, fat slob etc.
It is if you are the one they're referring to that way!
Why is "bag of bones" not as offensive as "fat slob" (neither is meant
to be a compliment, and both similarly imply little-or-nothing of
worth)? And I don't make any judgments about anorexics, but I don't
think it's less offensive to be *automatically* labeled as anorexic (a
psychiatric illness) just because you're thin than it is to be called
a fat slob if you're bigger.
Fat would be fine. Fat is not a dirty word or anything, but adding the "slob" "lazy" etc, is what makes it offensive. If someone said "filthy bag of bones" "disgusting, smelly anorexic," or some such, then it would be the same IMO. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.
Have you ever seen those words attached to skinny, bony, etc.?
No, I haven't heard "slob" or "pig" attached to a thin person, but
I've heard "cancer patient" and "refugee" and I doubt those are used
on big people. Each has their own collection of unkind, offensive
labels.
Cancer patient and refugee are the same as slob and pig? I don't think so, at least to me they're not.
It's also my opinion that
everybody should mind their own business, body, and food intake when it
comes to eating, and quit worrying about somebody else, and especially the
remarks that are causing all these eating disorders in kids from practically
the time they're old enough to walk these days. A slender appearance isn't
all that counts in making a person interesting to know, especially if one is
obsessed with it, and by obsessed, I mean constantly talking about it.
Amen!
There are those who are obsessed with commenting about it, too.
Yes, and IRL they should mind their own business too.
Is there anything more *uninteresting* than someone talking about calories,
fat content, excercise regimen, blah blah blah when at a party, or out to
lunch or dinner? If there is, I don't know what it is. :-)
Maybe not *more* uninteresting but equally uninteresting, and it is
linking EVERY subject to one of MANY ongoing medical conditions or
ailments! ... i.e. ...
- "Do you like lasagna?" "Oh, I can't eat that because I'm allergic to
ricotta" (followed by a 10-min explanation of what happens when they
eat ricotta)
- "Did you see yesterday's Y&R?" "I started to watch, but my heartburn
was so bad (followed by a 10-min description of what they ate, the
ensuing pain and everything they did for it)"
- "Are you cooking dinner on Thanksgiving?" "I'd love to cook, but I
have a bad back and (followed by a 10-min explanation of how they
can't stand long enough to chop onions, etc.)
Know what I mean?
Shirl
Oh yeah, I know what you mean...I don't do medical reports, and I don't listen to medical reports...unless it's something that's not every day, such as if a friend had a heart attack and is in the hospital, I want to know that, but once they're out, and I've helped them all I can, I do not want to hear every detail of the hospital over and over, or of the attack. As my friends and I grow older, there will always be little aches and pains, and I do not want to start each day with discussions of a current malady.
