Or, geez, guys, give it some thought and go buy someone something nice you
think they'd really like but wouldn't splurge on for themselves. Gift
cards are okay, but I think it's sad that gift-giving has basically come
down to an exchange of money. We may as well just ditch the gift-giving
and keep our own cash.
I almost never give gift cards.
D.M. Stillwood:
That might work for some, in some circumstances, or even in most
circumstances, but there are always exceptions. I have gotten gift cards
to
local grocery stores--very useful, although I burn them up rather quickly!
And last year, my son gave me a gift card to Bath and Body Works, a real
surprise that he even thought of it, and MUCH more useful than him trying
to
figure out what I would like from that store. Believe me, I've seen him
there (when "we" were picking out gifts for grandma), and he was basically
just saying, "Yeah, Ma," and, "Nice, Ma," and, "I guess so, Ma." There
would be NO way he would known that I would want the pecan scented lotion
(or the peppermint, or the ice tea)--in fact, I didn't even know it until I
was in there browsing and saw the stuff. That gift card just kept on
giving, and I have told him many times throughout the year how much I
enjoyed it (hint, hint). He also gave me a card to The Body Shop a number
of years ago, but I kind of lobbied for that one. The BBW card was a total
surprise. So, yeah, the thought really did count on that one.
I agree with Dana. I think the point is that I give you a $50 gift card
to Bath and Body Works because I know you love to shop there, and you
give me a $50 gift card to the local pilot shop because you know I love
to shop there, and we could just as easily have exchanged seasons
greetings, had a cup of egg-nog, and each used our own $50 at the places
where we always spend our own money anyway. The only difference is the
extra time spent buying the cards and remembering to redeem them before
they expire.
IMO.

When I moved last February, I found a gift card to a video chain store that
had been a Secret Santa present three years ago! I remembered that we had to
make a list of items we might want our Santa to get for us, of course under
the alloted amount to be spent. On so many levels this seemed now to be a
waste of time :-(
