If the stores are closed/bankrupt, the gift cards online are just as
worthless - NBC explained that in their story.
Given all that, you'd probably do better with an American Express gift
card or the like, something more universal that can be redeemed
anywhere rather than just one chain of stores.

I don't know if I would trust any of them at the moment. We just got a
letter from American Express that they were closing all of the small
business lines of credit effective January 9, 2009, they didn't really
say why, just that they are sorry for any inconvenience. I think it's
best to just get new, crisp cash to put in the cards, or a check. JMO
Or a gift! C'mon guys, what ever happened to giving gifts? And "it's
the thought that counts?" Between gift cards and registries, the whole
thing has become hideously greedy and grabby. God forbid you actually
pick something out for someone else that's not *exactly* what they would
have purchased for themselves.

"Ugh" to mailing gifts, though. I can't stand the post office this
time of year.

Doesn't your post office have an automatic shipping station? I can go
in the middle of the frickin' night -- and do. Weigh the stuff, put in
the to and from zips, choose what type and cost of shipping is
appropriate, swipe your card. It prints out a mailing label, you slap
in on the package, and drop it in the big package receiver slot. Dead easy.

Which reminds me, I have to get going on some sort of little treats to
ship to family.

There's also the option of buying something online and having it
gift-wrapped and shipped to the recipient. Normally, I love to do the
wrapping and such myself, but if you are picking out something large
or oddly shaped, it is a nice option. My parents get a kick out of how
beautifully packaged some of the things I order for them are and they
receive the package early enough that they can shake and sniff and try
to guess. That's half the fun!

I know people who go out on Christmas Eve, buy the gift, wrap it
(often in the car), give it to the person, who unwraps it and that's
it. Geez, the paper didn't even get cold before it was ripped off.
It's depressing.
