I think we're all using Karen's description of her surgery - she is the one
who said "hysterectomy". It is interesting that most women have removal of
the uterus and not the ovaries; whereas dogs and cats have the removal of
the uterus and the ovaries routinely.
Yeah, since even one ovary can produce the needed hormones to take a
women through menopause, unless there's a reason to remove them too,
they don't.
I worked for a vet for 10 years -- it wasn't charted as a "spay" or a
"hysterectomy" on a dog or cat's chart, it was *always* written as an
"ovario-hysterectomy" or an "O-H".
But with PEOPLE, whether women have had it ALL removed or only their
uterus, they generally just say they had a "hysterectomy" when they
discuss it, and only clarify if they still have one or both ovaries if
there's a specific reason to. I don't think I've ever heard any woman
say she had an "ovario-hysterectomy", and it would have been weird if
Karen had said that in her discussion with Neil, even though that would
have been the more accurate terminology. People just don't say that.
