I've been in that situation (not soap-related, but more generally).

The workplace sucks. The managers are dolts. The strategic plan is abysmally flawed.

So you want to help recruit a new star. There are two goals. First, you hope the new star will change the system dynamics, and re-energize the place. Second, you hope that you can show that your workplace is more desirable and positive than you think it is...as evidenced by your ability to attract a star.

So, I could see that being the motivation of someone like Thorsten.
