I need Shirley and her analogies to 'splain why your entry
above is wrong. "Spoiler" in the heading is NOT the only
mechanism that works for spoiler protection. Personal
control is.

Ravl, it isn't the ONLY mechanism that works, but it is the only one
that works *with filters*; if it says SPOILER in the header, that can be
filtered out and not show up in a person's list of readable threads ...
but adding the 123/ABC scroll-down space is not filter-able.

You are right -- the 123/ABC scroll-down list makes the *reader* the
filter, and that's less dependable than a mechanical/electronic filter.

As for an analogy, unfortunately, the one that popped into mind was one
that substantiates RH's argument. Here in AZ, there is still so much
development that there is still road construction *everywhere*. Major
roads are a mile long between stoplights. One of my biggest gripes is
turning onto a street and driving half-a-mile and THEN having cones
across the road with a sign saying, "Road Closed"! Grr! Doesn't it make
sense to tell people **BEFORE** they turn onto the street that it's
closed to through traffic?

I don't think Mark's 123/ABCs are "wrong", and I agree with you that if
a person is really sensitive about spoilers, the 123/ABCs should be
adequate warning. But I see RH's point, too -- he wants to rely on his
filter to protect him, and spoiler *space* doesn't enable that.
