Generally I agree with the conventional opinion that soaps are
ensemble efforts and no particular actor or character is utterly
essential to a particular soap's survival, but Beth/Harley comes so
close. She has really carried the show for quite a while, and if this
turns out to be true, it's going to be a devastating blow to GL, and
possibly a fatal one, given how desperately GL has been fighting even
to exist.
Something is terribly, terribly wrong at P&G. (I know, I know: Sun
rises in East, etc.). Losing Martha Byrne was mind-boggling, and wrong
on so many levels and for so many reasons, but even with Martha's
history, I don't think her presence at ATWT was as crucial to that
show's survival as Beth's at GL. So I cannot believe they did not give
BE whatever she wanted to stay.
Maybe they decided based on Nicole Forrester's Emmy nomination that
anybody is replaceable. I think they're wrong; I don't think Harley
can be successfully recast, and I think they'd be stupid even to try.

ITA with everything you've said, Michael, but if P&G or CBS didn't do everything they can to keep BE, I think it's probably because they feel Lizzie and Ashley and that age group are going to save them. NF and GT will probably be depended on to fill the void left by BE... but I don't see how that can be done.
Like you I can't see a replacement, and if Harley left town with those adorable boys... that is SOME hole in the show. I am just so sad about this... still can't believe it. I do think though, BE just wanted to leave for a number of reasons.
