Interesting.

Well, it's a device I used to use often in print graphics, but with a whole
n'other dimension added to it. Very effective IMO.

When's the last time you watched the show? Because, if you haven't been
watching, then, I'd have to say, no, that's just the way Kim looks now. >

My mom watches daily. I FF through most of it except for today when I
watched it air.
My mom's reaction in that one scene was, "God! Look how old she got!"
I noticed it only in that one scene.

It's what Kim looks like.

Lighting has a LOT to do with how facial features project onscreen.
That particular scene was not lit well at all.

One of the primary ways that this saves money is that it doesn't require the
time, the people & the equipment to light scenes to death. You allow for
more realistic lighting & you can shoot faster, save on budgets, save on
equipment costs. It's really a wonder that someone hasn't gone this way a
long time ago.

Basically soaps are, in all ways, a fast medium. Then, in the 80s soaps are
drastically changed to make the production modes both cost more & take MUCH
more time in lighting & setting up scenes. Then, in the 90s all networks
call for people to work actors only according to their minimums & maximums.
Voila, you've got a mess. Because use of cast calls on them to get back to
their roots of saving time & money on production modes, but they have no way
to do so & are heavily invested in sets, square footage, equipment &
personnel. Problem. GL's trying to solve those problems *and* have it look
fresh & interesting & with many many more 'backdrops' for their action than
any other show.

Also, in this new version why does the cast look like they suddenly
gained 25-30 pounds?

I don't think they do. Again, have you been watching the show? KZ decided a
few years ago just to quit trying to lose all the weight. And, she is &
always has been a sun worshipper, which eventually shows up on one's face.

Wasn't referring to KZ but to Josh, Alan, a few other characters
except for the overweight girl who looked 50-70 pounds overweight in
this particular episode.

I think they look just like they have been looking, which is fine.

Most of it reminded me how bad all of our home video productions are.

Didn't remind me at all of any home video.
