I just cannot make myself sit through an entire episode. And I don't
watch the tapes, so I've given up taping. If Gloria happens to be on,
or Jack, or Kevin, I'll watch, but that is it.
I hate all things Newman. As far as I'm concerned, the entire family
could be put on the bus. But I never saw the appeal of those people,
except for Nick and Sharon.
John/Gloria/Jack was such a great triad, and they ruined it by killing
John. I didn't understand what a mistake that was at the time--perhaps
not until I reacted to Bardwell. And troweling on Bardwell is nothing
more than that--a trowelling-on.
I agree with most of that. I'm having trouble re-engaging even though
it's clear they are attempting to "get back to basics" so to speak.
I'm happy Victoria is finally awake, and I'm enjoying their sweet
scenes. One of the reasons I'm liking that is because it's just nice to
see them united and focused on HAPPY for a change ... that's SUCH a
welcome and needed change, something we hadn't seen for way too long.
ITA, it was a mistake to kill John. I was tired of the Jack/John/Gloria
feud ... JMO, but seeing people at each other's throats incessantly gets
just as old and tired as seeing them blissfully happy for too long.
Everyone loved Katherine and Jill when they were at each other's
throats, too, but I'd had enough of that as well. After a while, the
incessant bickering makes them look like grade-schoolers.
I miss what we initially could feel about Gloria. Some saw her as a
gold-digger and nothing more. I always felt there was more to it, that
she was initially attracted to his $ but then grew to love him. I also
felt that she wanted to be accepted by Jack and Ashley, and when they
wouldn't let up on her, she came up with the worst, misguided and
twisted schemes to make THEM look bad and her good in John's eyes. But
under all that, you could still feel her inner turmoil at wanting so
desperately to be loved and accepted, not knowing how to make that
happen, and not being smart enough to know that she was just making
things worse by coming up with stupid schemes to force it.
I'd like to see some of that feeling among the characters -- I'd like to
see THEM want to believe others and understand without condoning, be
able to acknowledge each other's inner turmoils and be a little more
willing to give benefit of the doubt. Instead, characters either love or
hate each other, little in between, and little if any effort made by any
of them to try and cut anyone any slack, even though they sit around and
discuss each other at length.
Not sure if I said that clearly ... IMO, the characters of old that made
the show intriguing were not any more or less perfect than they are
today, but they were seen trying to understand each other, extending
kindness, giving benefit of the doubt ... so when someone messed up big
time and hurt someone else who had been cutting them slack, there was
more impact than when they're hurting someone who hates them anyway.
That's not nearly as intriguing/compelling as hurting someone who cares.
