Welcome to my world, although I never tried to medicate myself through
them. My panic attacks are pretty much confined to awful adrenalin
rushes and vertigo, exclusively triggered by big open spaces when I'm
alone. And the first time I had one, it was in church. Go figure.

I was privileged to have ONE anxiety attack in my early thirties. It
was at a time of great professional stress, and one afternoon I just
couldn't breathe and was sure I was having a heart attack. My resting
heart rate was in the 130s, I was sweaty and cold. There were
recurrent chest pains. So, you think you're having a heart attack and
(at least for me), that just ramped up the panic more.

So, that meant a rush to an inner city ER (that's where I was
working), where there were 2 bed in every "stall", and I was the ONLY
person not getting charcoal etc. for a drug abuse. The ER was
overflowing, and I remember it being such a dreadful experience, that
alone was incentive never to have one again :-).

Having one, and having it labelled, was helpful to me. If I ever have
one again, I'll know.

But it has also initiated some more or less permanent life changes for
me...some took a long time to implement...watch my diet, get enough
exercise, and make work just a little less important. It still
consumes my life, but not in the same way it did. Life and death
doesn't ride on the outcomes of work.

And, well, you'll notice I'm on r.a.t.s.c once in a while...that's a
great way to leave behind my cares for a while :-).

This is one of the reasons I'm interested in Lauren's story. Even
though I only had one, it's something I'm _aware_ of as a chronic
possibility in my life, and that I've altered my life around. It was
a warning sign. That's the kind of chronic story I'd like them to
script for Lauren...that the threat of attacks is always just around
the corner.
