Oh, it's not about grammar. It's that no one IRL talked like a Y&R
character, and no Y&R character ever talked like a real person.
OK, yes, THAT I did notice. The dialogue was so artificial I almost
thought it had to be deliberate, as though they were *trying* to
emphasize GC as a separate entity unto itself by making people there
talk in "GC speak," which resembled spoken English but would never be
found anywhere on Earth.
And it was consistent across days and episodes, so it couldn't have
been the fault of the script writers. Somebody had to be editing the
scripts to make people talk in this artificial way, or else the script
writers learned over time to write dialogue in a certain way so it
wouldn't get edited.
I wonder if it was Bell himself. I remember reading somewhere that
Irna Phillips's dialogue often sounded as though it were written for
silent screen movie captioning, because that was the medium that
somehow shaped her. Maybe Bell had some kind of model, too, thought I
don't know what it was.
I do know that the dialogue would occasionally drive me so crazy that
I had to change the channel or turn the TV off.

I was told that the show saw itself as "noirish," therefore it had no
room for humor.
