I was thinking about crafting a post and wrapping it around the Seinfeld

much where Y&R is at these days for me. If I don't think about it too
much, the show works quite well each day. But, if I step back and look
at the overall picture of storytelling, I realize how messy it all is.
Each day, though, in and of itself, delivers crisp dialogue and great
acting. I'm left satisfied after watching.
Repeated theme:
"If I don't think about it too much, the show works quite well

First, Y&R isn't a comedy (though that could be argued!), it's
supposed to be drama; stories don't necessarily have to be deep
or complicated, but they're supposed to make us think enough to
compel us to tune in every day. Hire some good actors, and most
of us can write crisp, satisfying dialogue for individual scenes. The
real test, though, is writing a continuing, 5-day-a-week story with
at
least enough logic that it is *somewhat* believable for a cast of
mostly adult, mostly educated characters that we relate to, identify
with, believe, like, love, hate, whatever. That takes some thinking
--
that's what keeps us tuning in.
But your theme -- it works if I don't think too much -- is another
reflection of society's attitude today. Instead of attention to detail
and quality, pride in products that withstand the test of time,
thought and planning so that at least *some* problems are
anticipated and solved before they arise, there's a whole different
attitude: don't look too closely and you won't see the flaws; don't
think while you read and you won't notice the typos or grammar
mistakes; don't pull any loose strings and the buttons won't fall off
or the seams come undone; don't try to wash it cuz it will fall
apart;
don't analyze what's in that quarter-pounder you just ate; and don't
bother repairing it cuz it ain't worth it.
In genera -- don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed!
Society is *so* extreme ... if you want the kind of quality people
offered 25 or 35 years ago, be prepared to wait forever *and* for
it to be outrageously expensive. The other alternative, mostly
the norm, is to expect things to be so sloppy (including many
relationships) that they're only held together by a thread.
Nothing personal, Ravl, just one of those days when I'm fed
up with that "don't focus on the goofs and you'll be happier"
attitude (a "coinkidink" that you posted this this morning).
I just miss the days when it was important to people
to do a good job, to offer a quality product, to stand behind
their work, to be able to justify diverting from the plan.
