Top-posting only, to say that I'm glad there is someone here who is
available to help out on Google Groups these days! With every improvement
they make, I like it less & less. But, as you pointed out, I only use it on
occasion, not regularly. - D.

I only access the group via Google Groups, and overall, I don't have
too many complaints. Part of your frustration may be because you're
using another service too. Provided you're logged in, GG keeps track
of which posts you've already read, and how many new posts there are
in each thread that you haven't read yet. If you only use GG
occasionally, it can't do this for you.
There've been times when the whole system cloggs up and posts "linger
somewhere" before appearing sometimes hours or even days later, but it
doesn't seem to happen as much as it used to. It often takes a few
minutes for the thread view (sort by reply) to catch up with real
time, but the "sort by date" view usually udates right away. Overall,
I don't find these problems that bad. I had similar problems with
usenet providers in the past anyway, so I can't say that Google is
terrible in this area.
Of course, there are advantages to a dedicated newsreader and usenet
account, the most important is the ability to download the whole
newsgroup to your computer so you can read it quicker and also while
you're offline, but it becomes less practical when you use more than
one computer. With a regular broadband connection, Google Groups loads
acceptably fast for me.
Some users may not understand all the options available, such as the
"Expand all/Collapse all", "Standard view/View as tree", etc., which
let you customize a few things about how the newsgroup is presented.
I'm not saying Google Groups is wonderful. It could be a lot better.
One thing that's perfect, is that it's free.
If anyone has any particular problem or question, please post back and
maybe one of us will have an answer or suggestion that'll help.
I also have to think it's pretty remarkable that something like this
exists at all. Back when Y&R first went on the air, no one would have
imagined there'd be such a place where people are brought together
initially because of the soap, but then wind up discussing some of the
most important topics of our day, in addition to sharing some of the
most personal thoughts and stories of our own lives.
I post to lots of other groups and lists and things, but RATSC was the
very first Internet community I discovered, many years ago. No place
I've been since has such a wonderful collection of people. I'm
grateful for the full, rich life that I enjoy, and sometimes I'm so
busy that I disappear from time to time. Regardless of whether I stop
back for a quick visit, or hang around for a while, RATSC always feels
like home.
Thank you, all!
Elmer
P.S.: Yikes!!! After typing all the above, and hitting "Send", I got
an error message saying my "session has expired, please try again
later". No need to panic. Here's what I'll do:
Use Cmd-A (Ctrl-A for Windows) to select everything I've typed.
Then use Cmd-C (Ctrl-C for Windows) to copy it to the clipboard.
Click "Sign out".
Sign back in. It'll go back to the original message.
Click "Reply" again.
Use Cmd-A (Ctrl-A for Windows) to select all the text again.
Now use Cmd-V (Ctrl-V for Windows) to replace it with what I
previously typed.
Finally I'll press "Send" again.
I hope it works! (If you're reading this it did!)
