I love that... "Draft College Republicans"!!! The perfect solution!

I am very much in favor of reinstituting the draft. As a Vietnam-era
kid, I would *never* have believed that I'd be saying that now, but I'm
100% convinced we need the draft. Why? Because it's way too easy for
chickenhawks like those College Republicans (not to mention their
parents) to be all rah-rah about the war, and say stuff like "Hey, they
volunteered!" Well, yeah, but how many of them volunteered because it
was the only way they could get money for college? Or get out of their
poverty-ridden neighborhood?

Exactly, we all know why they enlisted. ITA with you, Dana. I nearly
choked when that one kid said "Well, I'm a career person"... his reason
for not enlisting... although gung ho about the war, as they all were.

They have no idea how moronic and pathetic their excuses offered were.

I graduated from a fancy-ass prep school, where I associated with the
children of the rich-to-obscenely-rich. NOT ONE kid I knew at prep was
planning to go into the military. NOT ONE.

This does not surprise me at all.

If a war is worth fighting, it's worth risking everyone's sons. If it's
not worth risking everyone's sons, we shouldn't be fighting at all.

ITA... I say draft them all [if *really* necessary].

Two of my three brothers were eligible for the draft during the
Vietnam era -- a very scary time. Everybody knew the war was a waste
of life by 1968, yet we kept sending boys to their deaths.

We would not be in Iraq if we had a draft, unless we had exceptions
for wealthy white boys and girls.

Remember the ERA? Folks feared that women would be drafted. Now,
women are getting wounded and none of those Eagle Forum women are
raising a stink about it. Frankly, I think it is a sad sign of the
times that women get blown up and men stay home waving their flags.

Here in the south, people joined the Guard and Reserves to add about
$150 a month to their meager incomes. A friend's son learned his
reserve unit was going to Irag, and decided he couldn't trust those
guys in combat, so he enlisted in the regular army so that he could
fight with professionals. He's been in Iraq for several months now.
So far, he is okay. He mans a machine gun on a Humvee, so it's pretty
scary.
