First, you say "with one show that's going through this much of an
inside makeover"...but I think that time is past. The show was made
over in 2006. The make-over was in full-bloom during early 2007.
In recent weeks, I think, there's been a tweak (to get rid of some of the
most *outrageously farfetched* pieces), but basically the show is MADE-
OVER. Until this creative team is replaced (which, of course, it will
be), I see the show as being in a stable place for the forseeable
future. The question is how long until the NEXT makeover, and who
will oversee that one?
I disagree. I don't see the show as "stable" now or in the foreseeable
future. Ed Scott was fired what? 6 weeks ago? Barbara Bloom, Head of
Daytime, has recently done some outlining or writing. That's not exactly
commonly done. There are still changes happening on the inside that
involve ridding the show of "old regime" thinking people. Yes, I
acknowledge that the major elements of the makeover were done during
2006 and early 2007, but the makeover continues.
Second, you track a real problem with the ratings (there are many).
If I were CBS, I'd be doing a major analysis to see (a) how existing
many viewers I've lost, (b) how many existing viewers I've converted
to less frequent viewing, (c) how many regular or occasional viewers
I've gained, and (d) the demographics of each of these groups.
Problem is, even if they were able to break the data down that far,
there is another breakdown that occurs in analyzing and *interpreting*
those results so that there is a well thought-out plan or formula
implemented that addresses the weak areas while not destroying the
strengths. The writers may indeed get mandates (altho that Sony/Nick's
death thing was ridiculous), but no one is analyzing the best way to
achieve the desired results without destroying the strengths. This
regime just throws things against the wall to see what sticks rather
than putting thought, time or energy into having a plan with some
justification behind it.
Maybe CBS has this kind of tracking data, but sadly we'll never see
it. Trust me, there is a part of me that thinks I went the WRONG way
somewhere :-). I'd love to be using my statistical training to be
doing this kind of audience analysis for the nets!
Yes, I have a lot of interest in that area, too! IMO that's *always*
where the breakdown has occurred -- the writers get the order "we want
you to target the younger audience", but how to best accomplish that is
left to them, all while they're trying to do the arduous, time-consuming
job just keeping up with writing the show! The prior regime put some
time and thought into developing a plan (successful or not) when such
mandates were handed to them. I have yet to see anything by this regime
that indicates they have any ongoing formula, just "fly by the seat of
your pants" writing. Sometimes that works, too, but not long term.
