Y&R = The Bebies

They had babies in homes or where else they happened to be at the
time. Actually, women did not die from childbed fever when they had
their babies at home. Women started dying constantly when they
started going to the hospital to have their babies. Before people
knew germs existed they did not know what caused illness. Ignác
Semmelweis, the brooding, meticulous nineteenth-century Hungarian
obstetrician figured it out but he could not convince the hospitals to
require their workers to wash their hands or keep women separated.
They were four and five to a bed. The physicians went from patient to
patient examining them without washing between. Sometimes they would
examine a dead body in the morgue then come up with bloody apron and
hands and examine a woman who'd had a baby. Going to the hospital in
those days....well, one would probably DIE in the hospital, not get
better, so people were afraid to even go. This doctor was in charge of
the teaching side of a large hospital, I believe in France. When he
could not convince the head people in the hospital to require hand
washing and instrument sterilization in a chloride solution, he
demanded that the students and nurses and physicians on his side of
the hospital do so. The deaths by childbed fever on the teaching side
of the hospital dropped to nothing while the other side raged on.
