FWIW, I haven't heard that angle of the story told like you tell it,
Cheri. What *I've* heard is that Menu Foods found out about the
problem during *routine* taste tests, when somewhere in the
neighborhood of 9 cats died after ingesting the tainted food. The way
that this started was all very innocent and "by the rules", so to
speak. The company was doing what it had probably done for years...
feeding its product to the animals who would consume it to see whether
or not animals would eat it.
Where this company went wrong, IMHO, is the point where they SAT ON
information that they had, for about two weeks, that there was a
problem with the food. They were trying to trace the source of the
problem before releasing information on it. I understand this, to a
degree, but at the same time, the company SHOULD have put out a
statement RIGHT FROM THE START that there was SOME sort of problem
with its wet pet food. They could have said that they were still
investigating and that they'd have more information for us consumers
shortly. Instead, they chose to keep their mouths shut about it for
two (or more) weeks, apparently.
THAT, to me, is criminal.
