I hear the word "hero" used often to describe people, and I
wonder if the word is over-used.
For example, thousands of people were killed durin 9/11. All
of whom are referred to as "heroes" by some people. I think
that there should be a better adjective to describe these
people. To me, a hero in this situation would be someone who
chose to place his/her life in danger for the sake of others
(like the first-responders).
My heart is sad for the loss of all of these people. But I
really wish we could find a better word for them....one that
embraces their situation more appropriately.
I totally agree with you, but the news media moves it the way they want
it to go. Lots of people across the country died on 9-11-01, in car
wrecks, in house fires, etc. None of them are referred to as heroes. As
tragic as 9-11 was, and it was, I don't feel that the victims were
heroes, unless they died or were injured as a result of helping someone
else. Everybody was saddened, but not everbody had the luxury of public
grief like politicians and others did.
I think the rest of the country deserves a big hand for carrying on as
usual, going to work, and keeping the country going through it all. My
hat is off to all those people as well.
