I totally agree. I have loved Y&R since I first saw it in 1973. My
husband bought me a motorcycle just after we were married and I broke my
leg on it. Got me off work for 6 weeks because I worked at USSteel and
you can't get into the plant with a cast. I just sat on the couch and
got totally engrossed. Bought my first VCR a few years later so I could
keep up.

The only thing that has changed in the past 20 years is me.

Not me, I haven't changed at all. I am still 22 and weigh 120. Of
course, I've been 22 for 36 years now. And we won't even talk about the
other part.

Thanks to all of you--even as the cast of r.a.t.s.c players has changed
over the years--for being a major through-line of continuity in my life.

Well now isn't this thread better spirited than some of those others
lately? See, that's why RATSC is always worth coming back to. There
really is a certain kind of community here. Yes, we all watch CBS
soaps, but it's so much more than that! We share many other life
experiences, everything from breaking bones to making coffee. If our
paths crossed someplace else in our daily lives, we'd probably never
notice each other, let alone strike up a conversation.

Somehow, this rather bizarre television program has brought us all
together. But what's particularly special, is that because Y&R has been
running for so long, it becomes a reference point or timeline into our
own lives. (What was I doing in May 1986? Where did I work and live?
With who? etc., etc.)

So, sure, when Tavir mentions buying her first VCR, I remember that
about May 1986 I was buying my second VCR. My home was broken into and
the thief took the VCR I had purchased a few years before. It was a JVC
that cost nearly $1,300. Although an early model, it was the best VCR I
ever owned. Great stereo sound, wireless remote, and the FF, Rew, Pause
and Slow functions performed better than any newer machine that
followed. The FF and Rew. functions did make a loud "click-ca-clunk"
sound when pressed, but I actually liked the noise. It reminded me of
the original "Concentration" game show and the noises that board made
when the prize/clue windows rotated 'round.

To replace the stolen JVC, I bought an RCA "Dimensia" model that cost
around $900. That was still a lot of money for a VCR, but it's
performance was very disappointing and I was never as happy with it as
the JVC. (That model name should have given me a clue!) It started
eating tapes after only a few years and I replaced it with a Sony. I
still have the RCA though, and actually use it as a modulator to
transmit the signal from my computer, stereo, or DishBox to TVs in
other parts of the house. I love the iTunes visualizer, and with this
simple setup, I can hear the music and see the visualizer on all the
TVs everywhere in the house. Best of all, I was able to put the old
Dimensia to good use instead of spending money on some new device(s)
just to accomplish the same thing!
