Holy moley :-).[snip]
I said nothing about starting a relationship with Gita, or
my desire to do so :-).
Should Kara be someone I would be interested in
marrying? Not relevant :-).
The ONLY reason I asked you, personally, was because *you* talked about
how appealing *YOU* found Kara and implied that Paul should have felt
the same.
The point I was trying to make when I asked you about starting a
relationship was that since you mentioned a "love interest" and Paul
wanting "a woman and family", maybe even though he found her *visually*
appealing and would have no problem taking her to the bedroom, he did
not find her "love interest" or "family" material, so he politely played
along but didn't instantly say, "Sure, Kara, your place or mine?"
You also offered that you found Gita entertaining and funny and would
have enjoyed spending more time with her ... maybe you meant on Y&R, I
thought you meant in the hypothetical, "if *I* were in those situations"
that I thought we'd been talking about.
She [Gita] was obviously also never suitable for Kevin or Mr.
Abbott, although in either case it would have been fun as hell to watch
them get it on with her.
It would? I disagree. Just because a woman has a sexy body and an
airhead, goofy personality doesn't mean it would be fun to watch any
male character degrade themselves by taking advantage of it. Kevin and
Glo had their fun with her and I'm all for adding a little comic relief
from time to time, but IMO that lasted WAY longer than it should have
and was far beneath Y&R's usual standards.
See, it's okay to have temporary characters who help move
our regulars in a new direction.
Agreed. But once in a while, why can't they be above-board,
on-the-level, professional, personable people? Why does the temporary
character that helps move a regular (man) in a new direction always have
to be some easy bubble-head?
For example, Gita was some comic relief, she
lasted as long as she needed to, and if Kevin _had_ had a tryst with
her, it would have been a nice way to transition him from internet
pedophile to an appreciater of other kinds of women.
LOL at "other kinds of women".
Moving to Gita would have at least been legal; other than that, I don't
see why that would have been such a great transition for Kevin. And
besides, he *did* show an appreciation for other kinds of women after
the Lily ordeal ... remember he grew quite attached to Lauren.
So, too, with this Kara. What I'm saying is that Paul seems to be as
celibate as his priest brother, and he is quickly becoming an
infrequent, asexual, supporting player...not much different from Gina
or Mamie. Should Kara be his new love interest for the next two years?
Perhaps she will. I agree with you that Paul would be more interesting
if he were part of a story with a love interest. HOWEVER, right now,
everyone in relationships seems to be doing the same thing -- cheating.
I'd rather they keep Paul a supporting player than to have him in a
relationship with a third party involved. Enough, already! Doesn't
ANYONE in GC have any moral standards anymore? Yes, sometimes it
happens, but can't ANY of them pull away and say, "No, sorry ... I
really *can't* do this," and MEAN it?
My point stands...Doug should have looked like he was having more fun
with her.
Why? IMO, he was polite. Maybe he *wasn't* having fun. When you don't
want to be pursued THAT aggressively, it isn't always "fun" to be in
that situation. Maybe he didn't LIKE her the way YOU think he should
have.
The relationship doesn't have to go anywhere...but, Doug
needs to give Paul a bit more energy and enthusiasm. That creates
energy for the writers. Should it work the other way around--they
write for him? SURE! But there are plenty of examples of it working
the other way around.
I know what you're saying, and I agree about the relationship between
writer and actor, sort of like playing a musical instrument when it
works out well. I know many temporary characters have remained (Victor,
for one) because they turned out to be much more than expected.
I would have been more excited to see Paul show energy and enthusiasm if
the Kara person had been a little more subdued and didn't come across
like she wanted to devour him! I'd love to see Paul interested in
someone, just not your everyday, typical, run-of-the-mill soap temptress.
TPTB saw that, and they wrote FOR the chemistry.
I know, and I've been aware of other times when a spark on-screen
prompted a new idea/story. I'm just saying that it isn't necessarily a
good thing to have Paul, the character, go after the first seductive
body that offers herself to him just because he's not in a relationship.
I think it would have given the ACTOR a better opportunity to have shown
energy, enthusiasm and interest, if *the woman* had not come on like
gangbusters herself. They keep putting him with women who take over the
scene and steamroll him. If WE can see that, why can't they? I'd like to
see Paul, or any man, be the initiator once in a while instead of always
having them succumb to these women that come on the scene and throw
themselves at them.
Bimbos-of-the-week who inspire eye rolls are not necessarily bad
things. (Himbos of the month, neither).
They are bad when that's all the show is offering in the way of new
arrivals and/or temporary characters. Nearly all new women have been
this aggressive, forward type. Why can't they bring in someone who is
beautiful but subtle? someone the man takes an interest in because he
wants to find out more about her ... not every man finds a woman who
appears on the scene making NO SECRET that she's available all that
intriguing, beautiful or not.
And I'm not talking about the other extreme, where a man or woman comes
on the scene as a brooding mystery that we know nothing about for so
long that we stop WANTING to know more.
They can spark new energy, and sometimes they can catch
our eyes and stick around for a while. I'd never judge Kara
on her first episode :-).
That's all we have to judge her on so far. Since she's brand new, she
obviously must have acted the scene the way they wrote it for her ...
same ole, same ole -- pretty face and body dumped into a scene making
it painfully obvious that she WANTS Paul. That's supposed to be new and
exciting? If anything, Paul did a great job NOT having the typical,
expected reaction!
