I think that's actually a realistic guy-girl dynamic, but it doesn't
convey that he's taking her seriously.
One of Nicks' greatest features is his smile. I think it conveys the fun
and freedom he feels with Phyllis, and there is supposedly no reason to
be taking her seriously at this point. They're just "friends." That grin
is a welcome change from that surly scowl IMO. Also, Phyllis trying to
act the part of scared, was one of the few times I've seen her do a bad
job of acting.
