Well, I knew exactly what you were going for & I can see it being an
important story & one that the soaps could choose to tell - as long as they
didn't play it like a 'gay exploitation' movie or something. But, I don't
think we're there yet. It's a huge thing that they're fully telling this
story & hitting all the bases as they go. I hope they keep on telling this
one until eventually it's a happier story, including a boyfriend that is at
least tentatively accepted.
But, the biggest reason I am glad that the deprogramming camp was not going
to be a summer destination is because it would be so painful to watch - and
feel.
And, I think the very audience part you're speaking of needs to see what
we're seeing first & that it would be rushing them & maybe even cause them
to bail out - something we, the show, the genre, Gay Luc, ... nobody needs.
For whatever reason, Donna, they have sidestepped a boyfriend story
entirely. That's where I had hoped this would go, but no, it isn't
going anywhere in that direction.
Oh, I completely disagree that there has been any sidestepping. Boyfriend
would be later when the family issues have been resolved to whatever degree
they're going to & our boy has actually come out to more peers.
I don't think they've sidestepped the issue of romance for Luke. The drama surrounding Luke's coming out should be the first story they tell. So far they're doing a good job, even though the story has stopped and started because of backstage/casting issues. Besides, Luke has enough on his plate right now. It's still a relatively new story and we know Van has been signed to a 3 year contract and he said he expects it will happen and it's a aspect of the story he wants to play.
If this "deprogramming" business is the story they're going to tell --
and I think it's just as odd as you do -- I think they ought to tell
the truth about it, the *whole* truth, and not just waltz in with their
little hints, leaving people with the idea that maybe there's some kind
of "cure." That's the height of irresponsibility.
I think it's very clear that that's not what they are doing. This, to me, is
an incredibly responsible storyline!
I don't know if the deprogramming story will go any further than it has, but I think it might, especially with three months hanging time with MB on maternity leave.
But what can you expect, really, from writers and producers who think
Carly Tenney and Katie Peretti are viable dramatic characters?
I expect exactly what I'm getting - great traditional soap opera, finally
back on track, freed from an idiot like MADD, and tackling the issues of
life in the way the genre always has - except for the times when people have
kidnapped it toward adventure or primetime or movie tales or tried to take
us all back to the 1950s.
It is a story that daytime was born to tell, I think. An important issue featuring characters we know and love, who have been with us for years and years. We should be grateful that MADD is finally gone because as we know, ATWT has wanted to do this for years.
The only thing keeping this from being as good as AMC's Bianca coming out
storyline - to me - has been the pacing - since they let that get away from
them trying to deal with actor schedules - and that it's about guys instead
of gals. And, of course, since I'm a gal, Bianca's storyline resonated with
me slightly more than Luke's does.
The pacing has been the primary problem with the story, I agree. I really had problems when it became all about Jade and I'm glad she's no longer part of the story. Unfortunately, with MB on maternity leave, even though she'll still be making appearances, it'll still place the story in limbo somewhat. That's why I think we'll see more of the deprogramming aspect.
