That happened to my niece, who realized she was gay at about Luke's
age after falling for her closest female friend, who was not gay. It
was painful, because she ultimately lost the friendship, too, as the
friend was somewhat uncomfortable and suddenly announced she was
marrying some boyfriend and had no more time for my niece.

I agree. I think at this point, Kevin could be oblivious to Luke's
feelings, focusing on anything that keeps him away from his parents.
He's so eager to be anywhere but home that Luke could gaze openly at
him and he wouldn't notice.
