I don't know when it became across-the-board rampant to do away with
honorifics in the first place. It annoys the sh*t out of me to have
some 20-something, in a dentist's office, for instance, who doesn't
know me from Adam's off ox to call me by my first name. When my
grandmother was briefly in a nursing home, it just p*ssed me off to
hear the nurse's aides call her "Neva." I finally asked, as a matter
of respect to an elderly woman who had damned well earned it, that she
be called Mrs. Hopkins. How hard is that?
