I remember Micheal Zazlow first got sick- I noticed right away, before
anything was announced that he was loosing his ballance. I remember he
tried to put a cup down on the edge of a table and nearly dropped it.
At the time, I thought that it was part of the story line (that's how
good of an actor he was, I couldn't tell truth from fiction). I was so
saddened by the way the show execs treated him, giving him the boot and
saying that since he had Lou Gerrig's disease, he wouldn't be able to
play the powerful dynamic character that they invisioned Rodger as. And
then he went to another soap, and us fans who didn't watch that show
missed both him and Rodger in their final days. What a loss, to
everyone concerned. I have to admit, I carry bitterness toward the show
to this day because of this, and even go so far as to say that if my
beloved soap is cancelled or folds, it is there bad karma for treating
him so so so very wrong. Michael Zaslow will always be Roger Thorpe to
me.The bad guy you loved to hate. That replacement never worked for me
after Michael got ill and left the show.I felt so bad to hear about his
illness and then his death. My Aunt also died of Lou Gehring's Disease
and I saw first hand how bad it gets.I also am angry at GL for the way
they discarded him.It is all so sad. he and alex (as played by beverlee
mckinsey) were amazing together . when he came back to springfield in
that incaranation, he and holly fought nonstop. i'll never forget when
they were in the car (holly driving) and sniping at each other, he made
a sarcastic comment about how she used to follow him like a puppy all
over springfield. they had an accident and when she was unconscious, he
tried to give her mouth-to-mouth and she slugged him. that was so
funny. when blake (sherry stringfield) found out beth was alive and was
frantic to keep her away from philip. she was talking to roger about
what to do and made a reference to "getting rid of her" and roger got
this look on his face like he was going to be sick. zaslow was amazing;
he conveyed it all with his facial expression! He had apparently played
a character on the show earlier, and when he was let go from GL, OLTL
brought the character back so that Michael could return to the show. I
was watching at the time he returned, but hadn't been when he was on
there initially. At the time I thought it was the classiest thing a
soap had ever done - I think Rodger's sickness and resultant 'frailty'
could have brought out the good side of Rodger Thorpe. I mean, he
always loved his family, just not the right way. It would have been a
wonderful chance to make amends and deal with the real issues of
forgiveness and dying. The characters and everybody could have grieved
for his loss the right way. It would have been some of the best shows
ever made of GL.. Michael Zaslow was Roger Thorpe. He was one of my
favorite villians to watch growing up. He and Maureen Garret had such
great chemistry with each other. Its nice to see that his wife is
releasing a book about his struggle with Lou Gehrig's. I remember an
interview with him about him adopting his two daughters, how he was
afraid he was too old to adopt and he and his wife went to China and
adopted their daughters. When I think of GL, I still see Roger and
Holly.
