In the real world, is it common for leukemia patients to be suffering
from no symptoms at the time of diagnosis? I mean up until now other
than his asthma, Shane has been a healthy active kid with no
indication of any health problems. He was on his way to a
sleepover. He wasn't experiencing any illnesses. He was attending
school on a regular basis. Is this realistic that someone can have
leukemia and not display any symptoms of the disease? <<
There are many different kinds of leukemia (grouped into two major types:
chronic and acute), but on the whole and from unhappy personal experience,
I'd be inclined to say "no." Generally it's discovered because the person
gets sick (leukemia affects the ability to fight infection), and after
bunches of tests that rule out various things (like mono), ultimately they
figure out that it's leukemia.
