OLTL: Emmy pre-noms & TSJ

Rant time here. I've just read what must have been at least the third
article from a member of the soap press where the comment about their
surprise/indignation that Trevor St John was not among OLTL's
pre-nominations this year.
Now i'll concede that the pre-noms for OLTL were a mixed bag with some
truly deserved (Kathy Brier, Susan Haskell, Kristen Alderson, Kassie
DePaiva, Robert Woods) some odd ommissions (Robin Strasser who totally
could have won this year - but i believe she requested not to have her
name submitted as she often has done in recent years, Brian Kerwin) and
some "ya gotta be kiddin' me" inclusions (Farah Fath, Michael Easton -
who i will admit has turned in stronger performances this year than
years past...but i just don't see where he could put together a strong
reel; doubt he'll make it to the final noms, Brandon Buddy - while he is
no question OLTL's "Most improved Actor", he still has quite a far to go
before his performances would be consider Emmy-worthy) and i'll also
fully admit that yes, TSJ has been fully deserving of a nom in year's
past, i think i shall scream very loudly if i hear one more member of
the soap press say he was snubbed this year.
We all know - and indeed one of the biggest criticisms of such awards is
- that while in theory, Emmy noms and wins should represent the year as
a whole, a lot of time they come down to "the reel" - how strong two
selected episodes do up against the other reels of two selected
episodes. Meaning that it's not all that uncommon for someone to blow
it out of the park two days a year and phone it in the rest of the time.
Ideally in a perfect world Emmy awards would truly represent the top of
the year as a whole. And while TSJ had turned in some really strong
work in 2008 (as he has done in year's past), let's not forget he also
has made some truly awful "WTF"-style acting choices (or rather
"non-acting" choices - or acting "non-choices") in 2008 as well
especially during the spring before the Marty storyline. There was that
stretch of time where it was hard not to watch him and wonder if he was
unhappy with the writing and was just not even trying. Sorry, but to me
no matter how stellar he may have been at other times later in the year,
that whole inexcusable laziness disqualifies him from being considered
for something that sybolizes "the best of 2008".
There are so many actors on the show (and its competitors) both
pre-nom'd and not who bring it every single day no matter how grand or
small the scene, no matter how tired they get with the intense grind of
daily television production, no matter if they're front or back burner
or prop duty. These are the type who deserve awards and recognition.
And yes, many actors have not only "on" and "off" days but also
on-and-off years - look at RSW - for an awful long time, he's been
guilty of phoning it in throughout most of the year and then maybe
delivering one outstanding performance (like last year - his work in
episode 9999 had many declaring "Emmy win" but i kept thinking "yes, but
aside from that, could he put anything else on his reel?") but 2008 was
very different - he brought his A-game throughout the year, not just on
a select few days and i'd be happy to see him win this year. TSJ has
had some good years before and has the potential to have more in the
future but 2008 is not by any stretch of the imagination his year.
Well, i did warn everyone up front that this would be a rant! I just
have a hard time believing that so many members of the soap press whose
job it should be to remember and keep track of such things have
conveniently forgotten how truly bad he was for a significant portion of
the year.
