What about Viki's Ben, was he a great actor sorely missed? If so, why

did he ever leave?

I didn't see much of Ben myself except around the end of his run as that
was for a time when i was tuned out, but he left due to the actor
getting a part of Life With Bonnie, a primetime series. Character-wise,
Ben is considered Viki's last true romance (before Charlie), with her
totally having his heart (literally - when Viki needed a heart
transplant, she was given Ben's heart)

The twist to it was that, Mark Derwin (who played Ben) was cast on
"Life with Bonnie" and his OLTL character was put into a coma to
accommodate his being offscreen in the hopes that either scheduling
would eventually work out for him to do some appearances or in case
"Life with Bonnie" was cancelled, Derwin could return to the role
fulltime.
When it looked like his absence was going to be indefinite because LWB
was successful, the decision was made to kill off the character and do
the heart transplant story..."Life with Bonnie" was cancelled by ABC
just as the heart transplant story aired!
