With what's coming up for "baby Slater" (no spoilers on the name,
although you can find it at rec.arts.abc).

A baby born has problems. Kidnapping most common in recent events
(even dating as far back to Maddie Grey). Health problems. Learning
problem. Could we _please_ put our heads together and find out who the
LAST baby born who DIDN'T have some horrible event happen to him/her?

*dripping w/ sarcasm here*: Oh, I know! How about _this_ for a
change?!: You have a female character, she gets pregnant, she has the
baby. Nothing bad happens until (((at least))) 5 years of age. Sure,
stuff can happen to the kid's parents, but _totally_ unrelated to the
little boy or girl (or boys, or girls).

And most of these babies show absolutely no ramifications of early
health problems after the first 2-3 weeks. Somebody help me out here,
because I (thankfully) have no direct experience with extreme
preemies....but doesn't it take years for them to catch up on the
growth scale? As in, at 3 y.o. they'd still tend toward being small
for their age? Also, with the great advances in preemie care, there
are fewer long-lasting repercussions, but there's still immense risk
for developmental delays of various kinds. What are the statistics on
that nowadays? All those PV preemie babies have grown intro strapping
"children who are above average."

I'm especially curious for real-life experience stories because my
friend's grandchild was just delivered at 2 lbs. 4 oz. two weeks ago,
way early. The mom couldn't even hold the baby until a week later. The
baby just made up her birthweight and gained an ounce as of two days
ago. IRL, this story isn't going to be "over" in 2-3 weeks.

I was born at 30 weeks gestation in 1972, and weighed 2 lbs 9 ounces. I was
in the hospital for three months, and my mother couldn't hold me until I was
about two months old. My eyes weren't propperly cared for in the incubator,
and as a result of that I am totally blind. It doesn't happen as much now,
but it still happens. I have no other developmental delays, although I could
have. I am of a normal size though, and grew well after I got home. I know
to most blindness is a devastating prospect, and it was to my parents I am
sure, but it is just life for me. I see it as normal, and I really can't
miss sight since I of course don't remember having any.

care is much better now, and it is very possible any baby will have no real
problems at all, but there would be a very long hospital stay.
