Wordy McWord. Helter Skelter doesn't bug me so much b/c while the
actual real-life story is horrible, the TV movie comes off all '70s
corny now (JMHO). But I still have *never* seen Rosemary's Baby all the
way through - I've seen the whole movie, but never in one full-on
sitting. Ruth Gordon just scares me too much. And yet, I love her to
pieces in Harold and Maude and can watch that over and over. <<

I love Ruth Gordon in _both_ those movies! She's just hilarious in
Rosemary's Baby, like one of my elderly well-to-do female Jewish relatives
crossed with a Satan worshipper. Which in some bizarre sense perfectly
describes those relatives... :-D

One thing I've got to add is that Rosemary's Baby is even worse if you catch
it on one of the cable channels that won't cut it for content and time, like
AMC. Having first seen it on television (after reading the novel when I was
WAY too young to be reading that kind of thing!), I thought the film was
rather tame. A few years ago I caught the whole thing, and it was
just...astonishingly frightening and graphic. And nightmare-inducing!

But the thing that always makes me laugh is remembering the Mad Magazine
treatment of the film, and the specific panel with Mia Farrow looking at the
necklace and saying "Tannis, anyone?" Hee.

I read "The Exorcist" while alone and Jim flying war missions! At night
I
swear I felt cold air whizzing by me. Never again when alone.
Another freaky one that got to me was "The Sentinel", from years
ago. <<

The only book that ever affected me like that was Stephen King's "It." VERY
scary stuff! I had just separated from my first husband and was living in a
basement apartment, alone - living alone for the first time in my life! I
was so disturbed by that book that I could only read it in daylight hours at
the office and on the subway.
