Re: A cast of Simons

When I watch movies there are two kinds of like, I like the character
as a person and I like the character cause they're interesting, (even
though I'd hate to meet them in person). Most of the characters in
MST3K movies are so badly written, and cardboard characters that its
hard to like them as people.

One of the things that make a lot of the movies so bad is that I don't
care about any of the characters as people, either like or hate them.
They're either so bland and nice, that I'd just as soon see them eaten
by a monster or they're bad in exactly the same way the bad guys are in
a hundred movies.

It tells me a lot, that even though I've watched every episode at least
3 times and many of them 10 or 15 times, I can't remember a single
character that I can say that I either liked or hated. I can remember
the actors who played them but not the characters themselves.

[ 2 point reference on the title. ]

Working my way through one of those ``280 public-domain movies
on ONE DVD for $2.99'' sets brought me to my first encounter with The
Giant Gila Monster. Not the MST3K episode, mind you, just the movie at
its core.

The Amazing Colosal Episode Guide etc noted that stupid people
make up most of the casts of their movies, and yes, they do. But an
equally large faction is repulsive, unpleasant people. Even many of
the heroes are smug or arrogant or at least unappealing in several key
ways. Some movies are made entirely of repulsive characters; see ``The
Giant Spider Invasion.''

Thus my surprise at ``The Giant Gila Monster'': I didn't dislike
any of the characters. In fact, I kind of liked all of them, even the
obnoxious guy needling the sheriff. Yeah, he was supposed to be a twerp,
but he did have a point about that whole ``destruction of evidence'' and
``theft from impounded cars'' stuff. Really, I could tolerate having
most any of the cast there over for dinner, something you can't say about
the majority of the movies' casts.

So I'm wondering: Which of the MiSTed movies has the most
likeable set of characters? Which one would you be happy to meet?
Is there a set you'd like to see *not* eaten by giant spiders?
