I know I will sound like a shill for Dell, but that's what I would
purchase. I've got a three year old 4550, and a 1 1/2 year old 4600
Dimension. No problems. Absolutely delighted with them. My parents and
three friends of mine also bought on my recommendation. Nothing but
smooth sailing for all of them. I've had 2 HP's in the past and they
were OK, had a few niggling problems (modem replaced and power supply)
but the Dell's just keep humming.

Not necessarily. Dell has "blow-out" sales near the end of every fiscal
quarter, in fact July 31st is the mid-point of their fiscal year. You
should be able to scarf up a good deal that last week of July (might
have to wait until the 30th) For example, I bought the 4600 which is a
P-4 2.6GHz, 80G drive, nVidia 5200 video card, CD-RW and CD-ROM,
Soundblaster sound card, with subwoofer speaker system for $530. This
was during a blow out sale at the end of their fiscal year (January 31)

A friend of mine used to build his own computers. I'd say he had built
at least a dozen of them over the years. When he decided to go Dell,
that did it for me. He explained that it was actually cheaper to buy a
Dell, that he wanted an Intel motherboard and didn't want any problems
with hardware compatibility. Plus it comes with a warranty. One more
thing, he used to be a sales rep for Intel. Case closed.

Dell's online store changes their deals every Thursday. You can buy
from either the home side or the small business side. If you order from
the small business side, you will have to pay sales tax, but even so,
the deals are usually better on small business. I'd check out the deals
they have going now and compare to the new deals on Thursday. Then
monitor it the prices through the end of the month. Near the end of the
month get your credit card ready.

One more thing, DON'T buy the Dimension 3000. Those $299 ads look
tempting but it isn't very expandable, some of them are Celeron
processors, and comes with onboard video and sound. If you are going to
get a high-end 3d video card you won't have anyplace to put it in a
3000. The 4700 has more expansion slots and will come with a Pentium 4
processor.

You can go to the Dell newsgroup for more info and ideas. It's a very
active group with knowledgable people.
