Hello all,
I am doing a production of Spoon River Anthogology. The production is
in the around and I want to create tree stumps that individual might
sit and stand on. I know the old chicken wire and paper maiche, or
styrofoam carving...but was wondering if anyone has a great way to
create the effect or a source to go to. Many thanks.

Bill,
Depends entirely on the budget and degree of realism desired. My
basic technique is to use construction Sonotubes with plywood filler
rings top and bottom. Glue to that an additional plate top and bottom
that gives the desired outline of the trunk and connect top to bottom
with stiffener sticks then cover with muslin soaked with carpenters
glue. Drape the fabric as desired and paint.
I've also done these with soft foam over welded steel rods (this for
Robert Goulet and a national tour of Camelot), muslin over a tubular
steel cage covered with chicken wire (this for the ballet Cinderella),
and Futura coatings polyurethane tree castings over steel tube for a
couple of Indian (oops- Native-American) casinos in Connecticut. If
you want theatrical realism draped muslin is the best.
Enjoy,
Lloyd
